Bubbie's Guilty Pleasure: Makom Shel Basar, Tel Aviv

מקום של בשר ("A Place of Meat"): a bone-in prime rib, a beef carpaccio and a famous biscuit cake in Neve Tzedek. Delicious, and not kosher.

Bubbie's Guilty Pleasure seal: NOT KOSHER

NOT KOSHER

Open Shabbat, shellfish on the menu, meat and dairy served together.

Bubbie's Guilty Pleasure is our seal for places that are not kosher but too good not to talk about. The Bubbie Approved seal is for kosher places only, always.

A Place of Meat? Bubbie Would Call It A Place of Meat, Bone, and Then Some.

Sweetheart, sit. Our crew went to Tel Aviv and came back with photos of a steak so big, Bubbie checked whether it needed its own passport.

Makom Shel Basar means "A Place of Meat," and for once a restaurant name is not exaggerating. It sits on Shabazi Street at the edge of Neve Tzedek, in an old Jerusalem stone building. It has been open since 2007, and it has its own dry aging room and butcher room in house.

Now Bubbie has to be honest with you, because that's the whole job: this place is not kosher. It's open on Shabbat, the menu has shrimp and calamari, and dairy shows up right next to the beef. If you keep kosher, this one is not for you, and Bubbie will find you something else. If you don't, keep reading.

What we ordered

Bone-in prime rib (64 NIS per 100 grams, about $20.60 per 100 g). The main event. A big, tomahawk-style bone-in rib, sliced, cooked medium-rare to medium, with a real char on the outside. It comes with a side and a sauce. It's sold by weight, so the bill depends on how hungry you are. Share it, unless you are trying to impress somebody.

Beef carpaccio (70 NIS, about $22.50). Thin, red, and pretty as a picture, with shaved white cheese on top and little dots of balsamic. That cheese is parmesan, the real dairy kind. Bubbie is just telling you what's on the plate.

Caesar salad (60 NIS, about $19.30). Someone at the table ordered a salad. At a place called A Place of Meat. Bubbie respects it. Somebody has to eat a vegetable so the rest of us can feel better.

Shahar cake, עוגת שחר (43 NIS, about $13.80). Their famous one. A rectangle of chilled biscuit cake: a thin cookie base, a pale vanilla cream layer, and a smooth dark chocolate top, sitting in a pool of pale custard sauce, on a plate with the restaurant's logo in Hebrew. Tel Aviv food writers call it "mythological." It's the cake every Israeli family made in a 9x13 pan, except here it got dressed up for a wedding.

The price talk

This is a special occasion steakhouse, bubbeleh. Entrecote runs 198 to 258 NIS (about $64 to $83) depending on size, and the bone-in cuts are priced per 100 grams. Bread with olive oil, garlic confit, and olives is 32 NIS (about $10). Sides like creamed spinach, onion rings, and potatoes au gratin are on the menu too. Lunch deals run Sunday to Thursday, noon to 4 PM, at 87 to 160 NIS. Bring your appetite, and maybe your rich uncle.

Prices as of October 2026, converted at about 3.1 NIS to $1. Prices change, so check before you go.

Bubbie's Guilty Pleasure seal: NOT KOSHER

Bubbie's verdict: Guilty Pleasure

NOT KOSHER. The Bubbie Approved seal is kosher-only.

The food? Bubbie won't lie. That prime rib looked like a holiday, the carpaccio was a beauty, and the cake is the kind you think about on the flight home.

So this one gets the Bubbie's Guilty Pleasure seal. Bubbie is giving it with one hand and clutching her pearls with the other. The Bubbie Approved seal stays kosher-only, sweetheart. No exceptions, not for a steak, not for a cake, not even for your cousin's wedding.

If it's for you, enjoy. If you keep kosher, Bubbie has plenty of kosher places in Tel Aviv to send you instead. Am Yisrael Chai, and also, wear a sweater.
